Nothing else in the house was permanently disabled including two other phones. The GE phone 29897GE2 I purchased lasted 3 weeks. During a wind storm my power went out for 15 seconds and when it came back on all the functions of the phone like caller ID, speaker and answering machine were no longer working even though the power light was lit.The phone could be used to make calls but the ringer was even broken for incoming calls.
Plus the recording quality is poor. This phone screeches an annoying pitch as the caller is attempting to leave a message. Unplugging and plugging it in again clears this up but not for long.
I bought this phone about 2 years ago. After plugging the phone back, the answering machine started working again. Thank God for Amazon.com reviews. I followed the instructions of some of the one-star reviews and unplugged the phone for a few minutes. After this phone dies, I won't buy another GE corded phone. I own the white version of this phone and received a "MEMORY FULL" error message. The phone would not record new messages even though it only held only a dozen messages previously.
If you are, then it's just two out of three that it falls. However, the phone in question feels terrible in the hand, has sub-par sound on the handset, and the cradle is very poorly designed; the phone falls out nine times out of ten unless you're very careful when you hang it up. As a result, I can't really recommend the phone for anything other than occasional use. The phone looks alright and is relatively easy to use, has a decent features list, and doesn't really have any wasted features. This is a good thing because of the feature-overload so many things today suffer from.
It corrects itself automatically. However, all you have to do is to unplug the phone from the electrical outlet for a few minutes and then plug it back in. Hope this helps Other reviews have complained that this speakerphone informs callers that the answering machine is full when it isn't and will not allow callers to leave messages. This just happened to us following a short power outage (even with a surge protector).
